they've been coming across the border since 2008 when horrific violence in their countries forced them to find shelter elsewhere.

Why the sudden interest? You've been played conservatives!!! By pushing the immigration crisis narrative the President and others have forced the issue in to the spotlight, pushing Congress and the Republicans in the House to take action.

Good job President Obama!

Then why do we not declare war central America and a couple of countries in S.A.? They are committing terror on their citizens causing them to inundate our borders. They are causing a problem for US, THE U.S. Lets quit kissing Israels arse and go to war in our own hemisphere, we haven't done that in awhile.

is it a requirement that there be a body of water and an Ellis Island facility before immigrants are welcomed in like they were in the later 1800's?

then make it so. Build an Ellis Island building on the border.

also, before answering the poll think hard on whether you want to show your bigoted side by choosing to send them back. We didn't send the Somalians back during their country's wars. There are plenty more examples too.

Why choose to send these folks back again? Is it because they are brown? Hmmm...?

How did they make it across Mexico then? Somebody had to guide them, or pay their way, and no matter how it happened it wasn't cheap. Somebody had to pay for it, somebody had to know how to get to points on the Northern Mexico border where they can all come across in droves.

Yeah, you are right. They just up and left El Salvador with no map or anything being 15yrs old and under and just "made it" to the border, un-hurt, and ready to immigrate. If you believe that there are no guides or organization doing this, you are the fool, but we already know that by your post.

I agree, those who are on our soil can stay until their fate is decided.

Along with that I would deploy our military along our border with orders to stop the northern progression. I would also sanction any Government that is adding to our problem with their worthless BS.

Enough of ours have died and been horribly wounded. Bring our people out of the middle east.
Our southern border would be a perfect place for our National Guard units to do their 2 weeks a year. It would not take too much of an effort to secure that border.

that's a judgement shared with very little facts to back it up.

President Obama requested 1.3 Billion to secure the borders and deal with the children. Republicans in Congress said no way.

Which part do you need facts on? At least I don't think those kids are mules. It matters not who stopped what, the fact is our government is not doing what is needed to solve the problem. We do have a problem. Maybe we truly need to take control and do the job ourselves. You game for that?

            what exactly is the problem?

Children are crossing and running in to the arms of border agents. Sounds like an Ellis Island issue to me. Process them and bring them in.

Meanwhile give the President the money to slow down the exodus of children and families from the three central american countries. Otherwise this problem will continue, regardless of what is put at the border. For god's sakes we're not East Germany or North Korea, or do you think we should be?

We did not pay for them (immigrants) to stay. THEY WORKED! There was no welfare or government programs back then. If they didn't work, they had nothing. If you want them (the illegals) here then get together, with the other liberals, and pay for them to stay. As long as you are paying I have no problem if they stay. If it is on my dime, send them back.

The US gives visa and temporary passes to immigrants all the time. They can do the same for these kids who need it more than some wealthy person from another country. The "legal" distinction being shouted out against these kids is a distraction. Suppose they came from boats along the coast, we wouldn't put them back on boats at sea.

You can suppose anything you want, that is a word much like if. The fact is this is a long, ongoing problem.
Quit with the children theme, Some of those children are criminals who know full well how to use violence.
Children in the middle east carry ak's and shoot at Americans, Children in Nam did the same. Some of our forces killed innocent women and kids.
At this point in our society don't throw "the kids" up as a reason.
I feel we should annex Mexico as the 51st state and close their southern border.

Close to 20% of them have air born diseases. Then the fact that not even half are children. Violent gang members and drug cartels are coming in too. I saw a clip on BBC that shows thousands from Iraq, Iran, Syria, and several other middle east countries are making their way to south america. They learn spanish and then make their way in across the border. We are in for a world of hurt and it is all being orchestrated by this administration. Last year when we sent troops to Afghanistan, the planes were required to come back empty. Pilots have spoken out then government officials had the planes packed with muslims, and guesses are at least 100,000 muslims from terrorist countries were dropped of here. We are about to be attacked from within and this so called leader is making it happen. I was a proud American, not anymore. We have reached the point of no return, any many do not realize it.

For those that don't remember history or didn't learn it, those like my father that came through Ellis Island were required to be of sound health, have a sponsor so as not to be a burden to society, and be able to read/write basic English. If those conditions were not met, you were sent back to your country of origin.

And, immigrants of those times were of one mind, to shed their past culture and embrace the one here in America. I was never taught nor do I understand Finnish, my father said we were now part of this country and would not speak the language even in anger.

Fast forward to the mess today, now we accommodate everything, including breaking the law. If we are to be a nation of laws, then these illegal acts should not be tolerated. If we tolerate breaking of one law, even by a President that is sworn to uphold all laws, then we are no longer a nation of laws. Thomas Jefferson wrote about how critical this was to our nation.

Bottom line; You want to live here, abide by our laws and our language and our culture or leave the way you came. And yes, I don't need to be anonymous about what is posted here.

Yes, send the unhealthy immigrants back. At Ellis Island - if the immigrants didn't pass a health exam, then, yes, children, grandparents, etc. were sent back. It's not a racial thing, it's a health issue.

They have endured too much to waste their lives and the dream of being an citizen of this great nation. For the most part of course. A few will fall by the wayside, as have other immigrants.

The Ku Klux Klan said it has been recruiting in the South in recent months, and over the weekend left fliers on cars in two Atlanta neighborhoods with the message: “Save the land. Join the Klan.” A vice president with the Klan chapter that handed out fliers in Atlanta’s Cabbagetown and Candler Park neighborhoods said they received 25 applications from their drive, and that the “immigration crisis is recruiting members for us.”

They've been coming across the border since President Bush signed a law that allowed children to stay and not be deported if they were from a country that does not have a border with us.

So get mad at President Bush for doing this, but first ask, why did he sign such a law? Is it because children are precious, no matter where they come from? Hey, all you child advocates in Calaveras, where are your manners?

The administration instead blames the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, which was signed into law by Bush. That law made it nearly impossible to deport unaccompanied minors to Central America without first letting them appear before an immigration judge. Because of the current backlog, the wait for such court appearances can be very lengthy, during which time the immigrant minors are released from custody.

Named after William Wilberforce — the British politician who led the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for 26 years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807 — the act (S. 3061) was geared to combat the trafficking of minors. The law was designed, its proponents asserted, to prevent victims of child trafficking from being automatically sent back to those who had effectively enslaved them, with the court appearance designed to allow the judge to evaluate their particular situation. The law’s contribution to the present crisis, though undeniable, is most likely an unanticipated consequence.

While President Bush did sign the measure, it was a bipartisan effort, and was originally written partially by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and introduced in the Senate by then-Senator, now Vice President, Joe Biden.

The New York Times quoted Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.), a chief backer of the original bill, who said multiple factors have contributed to the present crisis, including “exploitation of our laws, the ungoverned space in Central America, as well as the desperate poverty faced by those deciding to cross.”

“With all these factors in mind, it’s hard to think that today’s situation at the border can be directly attributed to a law that’s been in effect now for six years,” Fortenberry said.

“It is classic unintended consequences,” Marc Rosenblum, deputy director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Program at the Migration Policy Institute, told the Times. “This was certainly not what was envisioned.”

Aides to Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who was one of only two House Republicans who opposed the Wilberforce bill, told the Times that he did not foresee the current massive influx but was more concerned about federal spending at the time. Flake now supports revising the law. “Congress needs to change what it can, as soon as it can, to ensure that these unaccompanied minors are sent home without delay,” he said.

An unaccompanied child migrant was the first person in line on opening day of the new immigration station at Ellis Island. Her name was Annie Moore, and that day, January 1, 1892, happened to be her 15th birthday.

She had traveled with her two little brothers from Cork County, Ireland, and when they walked off the gangplank, she was awarded a certificate and a $10 gold coin for being the first to register.

Today, a statue of Annie stands on the island, a testament to the courage of millions of children who passed through those same doors, often traveling without an older family member to help them along.

go ahead Calaveras bigots, be on the wrong side of history, if you must. The governor of Massachusetts will have none of that nonsense and instead is doing this:

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) announced a proposal on Friday for two military facilities to serve as host sites for some of the thousands of undocumented Central American immigrants who have come into the U.S. in recent months, saying the move falls in line with the country’s tradition of helping children in need.

“We have rescued Irish children from famine, Russian and Ukrainian children from religious persecution, Cambodian children from genocide, Haitian children from earthquakes, Sudanese children from civil war, and New Orleans children from Hurricane Katrina,” Patrick said. “Once, in 1939, we turned our backs on Jewish children fleeing the Nazis, and it remains a blight on our national reputation. The point is that this good Nation is great when we open our doors and our hearts to needy children, and diminished when we don’t.”

people cannot be "illegals" - your grammar is wrong.

People arriving here are undocumented immigrants.

When you label someone an "illegal alien" or "illegal immigrant" or just plain "illegal," you are effectively saying the individual, as opposed to the actions the person has taken, is unlawful. The terms imply the very existence of an unauthorized migrant in America is criminal.

In this country, there is still a presumption of innocence that requires a jury to convict someone of a crime. If you don't pay your taxes, are you an illegal? What if you get a speeding ticket? A murder conviction? No. You're still not an illegal. Even alleged terrorists and child molesters aren't labeled illegals.

By becoming judge, jury and executioner, you dehumanize the individual and generate animosity toward them. New York Times editorial writer Lawrence Downes says "illegal" is often "a code word for racial and ethnic hatred."

"illegal immigrant" - this description does not exist. Immigrants cannot be illegal since there is no law defining an immigrant as illegal.

the poll numbers are quite small for the state and country, and that's what matters. Check out the "We the People" petition website, used by our administration to address and fix issues "the people" care about. Your issue does not register. I guess these words are no longer relevant:

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Ought to be changed to *bleep* off, there's no room at the inn.

It's not about blame. It's about helping CHILDREN.

I wonder what's causing the mindless, brutal violence that's causing children to flee their homes?

bat sh%$!t crazy Steve King and Michelle Bachmann are now authoring up the new House Bill today. That's right, crazy looney tones Steve King!

The appropriations bill, which was $659 million on Thursday night, will now include an additional $35 million to bolster National Guard resources at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The bill, which also contains numerous related policy riders, will also expand on language tweaking a 2008 trafficking law in order to expedite deportations of the migrants. […]

In addition to making it easier to expedite deportations, their proposal would allow immigration enforcement officials to detain children while they wait for deportation hearings and require immigration enforcement officials to investigate people taking custody of undocumented immigrant children to determine whether they are being compensated by drug smugglers.

Regarding DACA—the 2012 executive order granting stays of deportation to young undocumented immigrants brought to the country illegally by their parents—that language would revert back to the original legislation introduced by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. GOP leaders quietly softened the language in the earlier proposal, angering conservatives.

Well, here's a clue why Reps. Steve King and Michele Bachmann are sounding enthusiastic about the House GOP's new legislation on deporting refugee children—it apparently now includes a "papers please" provision:

The new version would require authorities to check the immigration status of people taking custody of the child migrants, [GOP Rep. Steve] King said.

Background: Under current law, refugee children fleeing Central American violence can stay with family or sponsors while their immigration case is processed instead of being forced to remain in temporary shelters overcrowded kennels. In practice, that's what happens in a majority of cases.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a decent human being who thinks there's anything wrong with that law or policy. Unless, of course, you're a House Republican. Then you start having fantasies about how all these illegal refugee kids are invading America, aided and abetted by their illegal sponsors, and so now we need to start making people show their proof of citizenship or at least legal status, otherwise this country will be overrun and our freedom destroyed and we'll all get thrown into FEMA camps. Or something.

Imagine, It could always be worse--imagine if these children were Muslim.

the cost of detaining the children, both financially and mentally. They'll have to mark all kids (especially in the vicinity of the border) in order to determine who is not an American.Otherwise we'll have our own Disappear'ds.

How about yellow stars? Kids like stars. That might be too far.

The parallels are striking and disgusting.

So the Republicans voted to prioritize resources on deporting children over deporting dangerous criminals! That's extraordinarily stupid. Way to go crazy looney House Republicans

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 1, 2014

Statement by the Press Secretary

The legislation put forward tonight by House Republicans does not responsibly address the problem of unaccompanied children apprehended at the border, and could result in the deportation of hundreds of thousands of DREAMers, young people who were brought to this country as children and are Americans in every way but on paper. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program prioritizes the limited resources of the Department of Homeland Security to deport dangerous criminals rather than DREAMers. It is extraordinary that House Republicans are demanding that we reverse that prioritization as a price for getting the resources needed to deal with the urgent humanitarian situation at the border, reduce the immigration court backlog, and address the root cause of child migration.

Republicans in Washington have repeatedly called the situation at our border a crisis; yet, tonight they are considering partisan legislation that will not address the problem and is sure to be rejected by the Senate. As the President said today, the Administration will continue to manage the border as responsibly as possible and address our broken immigration system, but no Administrative action is a substitute for Congressional action. That’s why the President will urge Congress to fix our broken immigration system once and for all upon returning from their recess by doing what the Senate did over a year ago and pass serious, comprehensive immigration reform legislation with bipartisan support.

Liberal Trolls = Commi Pinko Trash

While the rest of us in this County are hard at work, the Liberal Trolls are (all 4 of them) are at home leaching the system and trying to defend their chosen political party.

Fear not, WE ARE THE MAJORITY.

We will speak LOUDLY in November.

Meanwhile the GAS bill for AF1 is going to bankrupt those of who actually pay TAXES.

Having an opinion on Illegal Immigration DOES NOT make you a racist.

Disliking the A-HOLE in chief, does not make you a racist.

Or a Bigot.

The Vocal Minority would be living on the streets if weren't for us working folks.

They are ungrateful, espousing the talking points of the left, while taking the GOVT. handouts we pay for.

You know people like this, you meet them everyday, drawing a disability check and working under the table. Never paying any taxes and complaining every time you see them.

Low Lifes, Drug Addicts & we pay for it all.

Please remember, just because the govt. is paying for it does not make it free.

It's theft, those who take the DOLE w/o genuine need are THIEVES !

They steal from you and me, everyday, and we allow it.

Additionally, having an opinion that does not involve a leftist/socialist thought does not make us ignorant or small.

I have yet to meet a Liberal that could make an argument for his ideals w/o calling people stupid, bigot, racist. ignorant or uneducated.

They will say these things because their argument is useless w/o personally attacking another persons opinion as Bigoted.

Remember, just because you say it, Pinko. Doesn't make it so.

We will see who is control of both houses this fall, it will Neuter your worthless President, as if he has any balls now.
